THE HISPANIC CAUCUS 

¡Adelante! Seguiremos adelante, unidos como la familia hispana.

Hello and welcome to the Hispanic Caucus which is a related professional organization of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)! The purpose of the Caucus is to encourage the study of the communicative processes of language, speech, and hearing within the Hispanic community; to stimulate the exchange of information among persons involved with the Hispanic population; to disseminate such information; to encourage individuals involved with the Hispanic population to pursue professional growth; to promote the treatment of communicative disorders of Hispanic persons; to advocate the rights of Hispanic individuals with communicative disorders; and to promote the collective interests of the Caucus members. 

I’d like to introduce you to the 2008 Executive Board members.  Nate Cornish is the Vice President for Professional Practice in Speech-Language Pathology; Philip Vasquez is the Vice President for Audiology Services; Rebecca Alva is the Vice President for Public Relations; Melanie Frederick Strait is the Newsletter Editor, and Yvonne Calderón Arias is the Secretary/Treasurer.  Each of the Executive Board members is ready and willing to address the needs of the Hispanic Caucus members. 

The Caucus has numerous members who seek a forum that allows them to voice their needs, concerns, and issues as they relate to Hispanic speech-language pathology and audiology.  This forum also allows them to celebrate the numerous successes that have been achieved in the provision of services to the Latino population!   

This year the Caucus has established three primary goals for the year:  1) development of a website; 2) increasing the Hispanic Caucus membership; and 3) providing more information to the membership about the various Hispanic ethnic groups.  The Membership/Fundraising Committee, Technology Committee, and the Publications/Research Committee were established to help the Caucus achieve these goals.
